The Lotus Flower Tower
This is the climb you don’t want to miss! The world-famous Lotus Flower Tower is 22 pitches of awesome crack and face climbing! No pitch is harder than 5.10c and the climbing is an experience of a lifetime. Fly with Gravity Adventures into the wilds of Canada’s Northwest Territories for The Lotus Flower Tower and the world-famous Cirque of the Unclimbables
Arrival
You arrive in Yellowknife, in Canada’s North West Territories and then to Watson Lake. From here we fly into the wilds of southern Yukon and to the area we call the Cirque. In our flight, we pass Mt. Harrison Smith, the 2000-foot headwall of Mt. Proboscis, and then the Lotus Flower Tower itself, a southern spire of granite that stands out from the Cirque’s towering walls. The float plane lands on Glacier Lake. From there we hike two hours to the Fairy Meadows, our home and base camp for the next 5-14 days.
The Climb
The Lotus Flower Tower is twenty five hundred feet of continuous vertical cracks. As you climb, you discover that you can also face climb the wall. Protruding holds (the chicken heads) are positive and abudant. You’ll probably climb both.
It takes two days of good weather to make the ascent. The first half follows a large dihedral to a chimney and 6 pitches. At the 10th pitch, on a large ledge, we set up our bivi and enjoy a delicious meal and incredible views of the Nahanni River and the Cirque.
The next day brings again the choice: 12 more pitches of awesome crack climbing or onto the face; either will make you smile.
The top may be the climax of the climb, but the rappel is just as fun. From the top, it takes us 2 to 4 hours to sail back to the base.
Your Home: Fairy Meadows
Fairy Meadows is at the entrance to the Cirque. It is a beautiful place, comfortable secure and surrounded by spectacular views. You’ll love the boulders that adorn the meadow. They provide great shelters for our camp and they are full of endless possibilities for bouldering and sport climbing.
